Glutathione is a tripeptide produced from the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. It is produced in the liver and is a powerful antioxidant. Here it helps detoxify unwanted substances and assists in their excretion through bile. Some glutathione is also excreted into the blood stream where it acts to protect the integrity of the red and white blood cells. Glutathione helps to break down carbohydrates and oxidized fats that can lead to atherosclerosis. It may protect the liver from alcohol damage as well as mitigate some of the damage caused by tobacco smoke, as it is able to modify some harmful effects of chemicals. A lack of glutathione can accelerate the aging process, and affect the nervous system causing mental disorders, balance and coordination difficulties and tremors.
